Ben & Jerry’s, the well-known brand of super-premium ice cream, has made a bold move to enter the pet food industry with an ice cream for dogs. Now, when your pet gives you a longing look while you enjoy a frozen dessert, you can include him or her in on the fun. The Vermont-based food company announced on Monday that it will be launching a line of pet products called Doggie Desserts, which are frozen treats for dogs.
Initial dog product offerings
The product offering is starting off with two flavors that include Rosie’s batch and Pontch’s Mix, which are named after two dogs who are owned by employees of the innovative company. Rosie is a rescue pup of mixed breeds while Pontch is a French bulldog. The dog deserts reflect characteristics of the pets that they were named after.
The dog treat Pontch’s Mix blends peanut butter and pretzels into a frozen dessert that is designed to appeal to dog tastes. The second of the two products, Rosie’s batch, is a creamy ice cream with a pumpkin flavor that features a mixture of miniature cookies. The dog treats can be purchased individually or in packs. Each portion is available in a 4-ounce cup, and dog owners can find them in food stores or online at the retail website of the ice cream company.
Innovation at Ben & Jerry’s
This pet product launch is no surprise to employees who work in a very dog-friendly environment that allows up to 40 dogs to be present on the premises at any given time. Ben & Jerry’s has been known for decades as one of the most high-quality brands of premium ice cream that customers can find in most food stores. The Vermont company was founded in 1978 by two men for whom the enterprise was named after.
The flavors created by the company rapidly attracted a large fan base because of the innovative and bold ideas of mixing a variety of delicious ingredients into the ice cream. Clever names such as “Cherry Garcia” and “Chunky Monkey” served to add a personal touch that competing large corporate products lacked. A little-known fact about the unique chunky ice cream creations is that they were created by the co-founder Ben Cohen to be complex in texture because he had an impaired sense of taste and smell due to a rare sinus condition. Cohen reportedly has suffered from this affliction referred to as anosmia since birth.
