Amazon Workers Not Happy With Union
J.C. Thompson started working for the Amazon Bessemmer Fulfillment back in April 2020. He was asked if he planned on voting in a Union. He stated that he does not know what he will get out of a union vote. He said that he already has PTO and a 401K. He also stated that if he had to talk to the legislators, congressman, president, he would ask them if this was really about big money or the employees.
J.C. was one of the four Amazon workers that took part in a virtual media conference call on Wednesday. All of them were vocal about the fact that they did not want to be a part of a union. They all said that they do not see the point of joining a union.
The votes will be counted on March 30. Amazon workers will mail in their vote. People are being asked to vote about whether they want to be a part of the Wholesale & Department Store union. The union vote has gotten the attention of President Biden. It has also gotten attention from politicians and entertainers. They see it as an amazing opportunity for the workforce.
How the Workers Feel
The Amazon employees who took part in the interview stated that their workplace was not accurately portrayed in the media. They do not think that the union will do anything to improve the workplace. A spokeswoman for Amazon stated that the employee requested to the media. She also said that none of the pro-union workers took part in the interview.
Three of the four people had been a part of a union before. They said that if the center becomes a union, then they will transfer to another facility. They also stated that their experience at the center has been a positive one.
Carla Johnson stated working for the Amazon center in May 2020. She had to miss three months of work due to surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. She stated that her workplace accommodated her needs and understood her health concerns.
