When Dallas was buried in snow, a few weeks ago, Joe Walsh, the CEO and President of Thryv, Inc., and his team had an unprecedented opportunity to work together during a crisis. This is the ultimate test of any company — how does the leadership operate when the chips are down? Do they offer a few empty words or do they immediately spring into action?

For the team at Thryv, they would help out fellow employees in a huge, memorable way.  Walsh and his team immediately arranged for the Thryv Hotel & Conference Center, owned by Thryv, to be used as an emergency shelter. During the worst parts of the storm when Texans were without power or running water, the team at Thryv offered not only fellow employees but also their families and pets, a welcome escape from the frigid and life-threatening conditions. Miraculously, thanks to the quick action of the Thryv team , the company was able to provide emergency and complimentary shelter to 188 people, 34 dogs, and 8 cats.

Thryv Hotel & Conference Center

The Thryv Hotel & Conference Center is a 72-acre site designed to host various company events and everything from board meetings to corporate retreats., It would turn out to be an even more valuable resource during one of the worst weather events that Texas has ever faced:

When employees and their families needed shelter, heat, and electricity, the company was able to house 188 people, 34 dogs, and 8 cats in the hotel. Their efforts made it possible to offer employees true sanctuary from the storm at no cost to the team.

A Company Culture Around Kindness

The story of how the Thryv leadership team offered the Thryv Hotel to provide shelter and safety to its employees is truly inspirational. However, this act was not an isolated event by the Thryv team. These types of positive experiences make up the very fabric of Thryv. Colleagues open up to one another, managers mentor their employees, and executives make decisions that benefit everyone.

While not every event will grab headlines as the ‘snowpocalypse’ did, this doesn’t make them any less valuable to the team members who have come to expect higher standards from themselves and one another.

The leadership of the company witnesses countless interactions of employees stepping up to the plate to support one another. They hear even more stories about the genuine friendships that have been developed amongst the Thryv team. This is not feedback that executives are actively soliciting. It’s an organic kinship fostered by both the policies and compassion to be found at Thryv.

A Baseline of Empathy

As the adage goes, you can only understand another person when you attempt to walk in their shoes. This theme of empathy is weaved into Thryv’s culture. It’s what Thryv promotes for everyone. While it wasn’t easy to coordinate the logistics for nearly 200 people (and their pets), it wasn’t a challenge Thryv shied away from.

You can see these values echoed across Thryv’s products and services. One of the company’s flagship initiatives is their software that was created specifically for the service-based small and medium sized business community. As SMB advocates and supporters, Thryv’s goal was to create a true end-to-end experience for the user, giving them real-world answers to complex questions. This presented several challenges that could only be worked through by considering different segments and different kinds of users. Essentially, putting themselves in the ‘shoes’ of the SMB business owners.

Thryv’s SaaS Solution to SMB Demand

The crux of Thryv is its intuitive technology. A software developer at Thryv might be tasked to create tools for different kinds of business owners. Thryv is essentially asking the software developer to know their industry and the industry of a dog walker, a freelance project manager, a cake decorator, etc.

The software developer has to take into account how the business owner works and what the business owner’s customers demand. While SMB owners have a fair degree of control over their operations, they’re ultimately counting on their customers to support their livelihoods. The team at Thryv has to have the specialized knowledge to understand what this means on a granular level.

From payment options to account management, Thryv has created technology that directly supports the small business community.

This company takes the time to listen to small business owners and incorporate their feedback and suggestions. If a dentist has 5 different accounts for the same family, Thryv gives them the tools to streamline those accounts under one umbrella. Or if a graphic designer is having trouble keeping all the details of a project together, Thryv makes it possible to organize, track, and execute.

An Invested Community

There’s real power to be found when people care about a cause. During the historic winter storms in Texas, the team of Thryv recognized a problem, and immediately sprung into action, together, to offer a life-saving solution for their team. The infrastructure of the DFW area was never built to handle the bitter temperatures that blanketed the state. To keep people safe, CEO and President Joe Walsh and the Thryv team went the extra mile.

It’s easy to think of a company as little more than a faceless cog in a much larger machine. But Thryv has never accepted this definition. The company has always prioritized the core values of small businesses. Small business owners are their bread-and-butter and Thryv is a company dedicated to its people.

From regular company news to exciting milestones to unforeseen environmental and public health crises, there’s a strong thread that holds Thryv together. Instead of talking about ideals, the company prioritizes real solutions. This was apparent when the company opened its hotel up to so many of its employees and their families, and Thryv’s clients can see this every time they access the Thryv SaaS platform.
