In March 2020, there were very many reports in various media houses around the world discussing the state of preparedness of Africa in handling the coronavirus pandemic. Every media house was predicting doom to the continent with most of the countries classified as poor or developing, which means that such countries did not have the necessary infrastructure to deal with the pandemic, which was, inevitably, going to cause some major damages in the region.
However, twelve months down, it is clear that what most of the prominent individuals in the world were highlighting did not come to pass. In fact, the predictions that were directed towards the continent were only felt in the most developed countries in the world; the United Kingdom and the United States.
What Really Happened to Africa?
As the world approaches the final stage of dealing with the pandemic and returning back to normal business, many people and health experts have major questions on what happened in Africa. There is no doubt that the continent had some positive cases, with most of the numbers being reported in Egypt and South Africa. However, the cases in these countries cannot be compared with what most of the countries in Europe and North America were reporting.
This means that the positive cases are still prevalent in the continent, just like they have been prevalent in other parts of the world. However, the region has not been reporting an increase in the number of deaths associated with the virus. As such, the virus prevailing in this continent is not as severe as what has already been seen in other countries around the world.
Hard Immunity in the Population
In Africa, most people are vaccinated against most of the outbreaks that happen within the tropics, such as tuberculosis, polio, and other major health problems that occur through the environment. It is important to highlight that the structures that have been used in the immunization process for very many years could have probably been very effective in building herd immunity among the population.
Limited Information on the Pandemic
Another major issue of concern is that very limited information has been released to the public with regard to the virus conditions. It is obvious that some countries have not been releasing official details about this pandemic, which makes it really hard for an objective report to be given with regard to the overall status of the pandemic in these countries.
