John Ritenour is the co-founder of Insurance Office of America (IOA), a full-service international insurance agency based in Longwood, Florida. What started as a small, 3-person office in 1988 has now grown into the 28th largest insurance agency and the 15th largest privately held property and casualty firm in the United States, generating more than $225 million in revenue across more than 60 locations.
Such outstanding growth does not happen overnight. Rather, it has taken more than three decades for IOA to develop such an effective platform – one that continuously evolves to meet the changing demands of the industry. Ritenour has learned to implement specific strategies that ensure the ongoing growth of IOA and has openly shared his approach over the years. Here’s a glimpse into the strategies Ritenour utilizes to ensure his company’s ongoing success.
Always Put the Customer First
In the 1970s, Ritenour started his journey as an insurance agent selling door-to-door. With no previous experience, he relied solely on his tenacity and dedication. He also adopted the mindset that, if you focus on the customer first, the business and revenue will follow. This mindset served Ritenour well as he started to generate more revenue for the company than his associates.
Recognizing the strength of his skillset, Ritenour decided to open his own firm in 1988 – it was then called Insurance Office of Florida. John Ritenour shared, “I recognized that I was innately effective at forging professional relationships with clients. I also greatly enjoyed pursuing a professional venture that would bring customers peace of mind and much-needed service.”
Ritenour’s prediction that a client-centric approach would ultimately lead to company growth has come to fruition. He has since shared this philosophy with his employees, including his son Heath, who became CEO of IOA in 2008.
Create a Positive Corporate Culture
The desire to provide customers with the best possible service is woven into the fabric of IOA. Early in his career, John Ritenour recognized that the agent was the point of leverage between an insurance company and an insurance customer. A confident, motivated, and enthusiastic insurance agent is one who consistently does the job well. Based on this philosophy, IOA has implemented a policy of empowering team members as much as possible. The company rewards its producers according to their performance without limiting achievement or earnings.
Through a culture of empowerment, IOA ensures that its organizational behavior aligns with its business strategy. A culture where agents are able to be more agile in meeting customers’ specific needs in unique contexts while remaining faithful to the company’s well-established core values. This trust forms the foundation for effective communication within the company and is an invaluable resource for the team as a whole.
Understand Employees’ Positions
Ritenour’s original focus on serving customers by supporting its producers and employees comes from his experience as an agent working at a traditional insurance agency. Having been in their shoes, he understands his team. Being able to connect with teammates and partners in this way has equipped Ritenour with the knowledge he needs to retain agents, employees, and customers over the long term. Additionally, his experience with capped commissions and micromanagement has helped John Ritenour build a corporate culture that does not interfere with the producer’s ability to serve clients but, instead, encourages it.
Work-life balance has always been a priority for Ritenour, whose personal and business lives overlap more than the average person’s. Driven by the desire to provide his team with this same quality of life, Ritenour encourages them to be honest about their need for flexibility in balancing work and home interests.
This concern for producer and employee opinions and effectiveness is illustrated in IOA’s Grow Leaders from the Inside Out (GLIO) program, which invests in staff by offering professional workshops that help them develop leadership skills. These workshops also serve as a channel for employees to provide feedback on how they perceive the company’s culture and allow management to address concerns and adapt their behavior in the best interest of employees and, by extension, customers.
Participate in Sponsorships
Ritenour understands the importance of “being present” for organizational success and being visible is essential to promoting IOA’s message and supporting local communities. IOA sponsors many well-known national and local organizations, including the American Red Cross, Goodwill, and the American Heart Association, among others. By being a familiar face in the community, IOA positions itself as a trusted partner for clients, producers, and employees alike.
Ritenour has also discovered a way to connect his personal passion with his business and the community. Motivated by his love for sports, John Ritenour has developed a sports partnership division within the company, IOA Sports Partners, to insure sports-related risks. By partnering with various sports teams, John Ritenour has combined work and personal interests, connected with communities, and supported meaningful activities for him and his family.
Pay It Forward
The desire to give back stems from Ritenour’s childhood and living in low-income areas, where he rarely observed success. Despite his experience, he felt inspired to do something more. Today, Ritenour places great importance on giving back to the community, and he has done so through various initiatives, partnerships, and sponsorships. In particular, the IOA Foundation has been a way for John Ritenour to leverage its influence and direct some of its success toward giving back to the communities it serves. Its charitable focus is on supporting children from birth through college with a range of endeavors in education, health, and wellness, and mentoring. It focuses on other causes as well, including animal welfare, business mentorship, and social services.
Ritenour is also a firm believer in paying it forward. As a child, he witnessed the intergenerational transmission of lifestyles and wanted to break this cycle in his own family by providing his son with an enriching and stable lifestyle. Paying forward the lessons of his childhood, John Ritenour built a company while being a father, coach, mentor, and business partner to his son.
With his family and company in mind, Ritenour tried to limit the risk to both of their futures by ensuring Heath was well-prepared to continue his father’s legacy. In this way, the lessons that Ritenour learned about company culture are being paid forward to his employees, giving them a work lifestyle that allows them to have a high-quality life, something that has always been a priority for him. By keeping standards high for others, Ritenour has seen IOA develop into one of the most successful insurance agencies in the country.
