You’ve built your company’s reputation and developed the foundations of a great team. You know what to look for when hiring new people, but you still might struggle with finding top talent. One way to increase your chances of successfully recruiting is to follow in the footsteps of our most outstanding leaders. This article has shared four tips on how great business leaders spot and recruit the best talent.
1) Envision the end result and work backward
People who want things done and know exactly what they want are more likely to get hired. However, you can’t just hire anyone with a clear vision; they need to be able to turn that vision into reality. Great leaders envision their desired future outcome and then work backward from there. When hiring new talent, look for people who envision what you do – even if your company isn’t quite sure how it will get there yet.
2) Don’t forget about soft skills
We all know that certain skills can make or break a candidate’s chance of success in a role: communication, collaboration, empathy, strategic decision-making, and so on. They’re referred to as ‘hard’, because we can put a number on them and measure their worth. However, it’s easy to forget about ‘soft’ skills like personality and work ethic. Even though they can’t be measured in the same way, they’re still essential characteristics that many other people will notice. They make you stand out from your competition and can make or break your success within an organization.
3) Pay attention to cultural fit
It doesn’t matter how skilled a person is if he or she isn’t going to succeed – because of their attitude, notability. The same goes for cultural fit: someone might have all of the skills for a role but just won’t gel with your company culture. Before hiring new talent, evaluate if they’re likely to flourish within your environment. Check if their values align with yours and have the relevant characteristics to fit in your organization. If they don’t, you might want to rethink whether or not they’re right for the role.
4) Look for people who give back to the community
If someone is already helping out the community they live in, odds are they’ll be a valuable addition to your company. They put their money where their mouth is and care about more than just maximizing profit and short-term gains. They’re also selfless: not only do they consider others when making decisions, but they’re unafraid of putting themselves out there and can handle public exposure gracefully. These traits will serve them well in any business role.
