Risk of obese patients
According to the new study done by researchers, obese individuals have more respiratory problems that accelerate contracting and level of COVID-19 disease. Besides, countries in the world that record the highest number of citizens with obese conditions have registered the highest amount of deaths across the world. The overweight condition increases the pressure of blood due to the existence of excessive fats hence making breathing difficult.
Respiratory condition of obesity
When infected with COVID-19, the virus spread quickly due to the adverse respiratory condition worsening the COVID situation of such patients. As a result. Most of them are admitted into intensive care units with enabled ventilation mechanisms to supply them with more oxygen for breathing. The severe COVID-19 associated with the victims of obesity is caused by the inflammation of the breathing system reducing the number of air sacks within which enough oxygen is stored.
Underlying conditions
The doctors argued that the condition has been practically proven through the large number of COVID patients who are diagnosed with other underlying conditions. The medical experts explain that some of the patients of COVID-19 without such underlying conditions of obesity and related conditions ultimately recovered from the disease. The ones with underlying conditions eventually died and hence doctors concluded that such underlying conditions like cancer, diabetes, obesity, and many more acted as catalysts for the virus.
Inflammation of respiratory system
In most of the medical centers, doctors conducted the tests and from the tests, obese individuals are more vulnerable than individuals with an optimum weight due to inflammation. In conducting, the body mass index (BMI) of patients is determined to measure the amount of body fat about the weight and height of the individuals. If the BMI of patients is above 24, such patients are obese and if the BMI is below 18, the patients are rendered underweight. BMI between 18 and 24 are considered to have an optimum or normal weight.
The Body Mass Index
Once the Body Mass Index is determined, the risk of ICU admission and death due to COVID-19 is determined for the three classes of patients. That is, obese, underweight, and normal patients. The probability of these two relationships is then determined through scientific analyses and experiments. The COVID patients above 35 (obese) have a higher probability of being admitted to ICU. For instance, a study by one of the medical experts in Boston shows that patients with more than 35 obese conditions are twice as much likely to be admitted to the ICU centers.
Probability of death with obesity
Besides, the patients have a four times risk of death through their obese condition. The patients between 30 and 34 were equally obese and their likelihood of being admitted to ICU was high as well as the risk of death. However, the risk of admission and death for patients above 35 was higher than the risk of patients between 30 and 34. One of the researchers from the University of Boston, an associate professor in the school of medicine discovered that obese patients had high chances of fatty liver disease with higher chances of being invaded by viruses to increase the mortality rate of patients.
